- ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAtāʾ ibn Muqaddam al-Thaqafī
An imam, ḥāfiẓ, and authoritative transmitter—though given to tadlīs—Abū Ḥafṣ al-Thaqafī, a freedman of that clan, also called al-Muqaddamī, from Basra. He was the father of Muḥammad and ʿĀṣim and the paternal uncle of the imam Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddamī.
He narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Abū Ḥāzim al-Aʿraj, Khālid al-Ḥaḏḏāʾ, Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, Ibn Isḥāq, al-Aʿmash, and others of their generation.
Among those who transmitted from him were Aḥmad (ibn Ḥanbal), ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī, Ibn al-Madīnī, Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ, Aḥmad ibn al-Miqdām, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdah, Ḥafṣ ibn ʿAmr al-Rabbālī, Muḥammad ibn Bashshār, and many more.
Ibn Saʿd and others considered him trustworthy. Ibn Maʿīn said, “There is no harm in him.” Abū Ḥātim, on the other hand, said, “He is not to be used as proof.” Muḥammad ibn Saʿd further explained, “He is reliable, but he engaged in severe tadlīs: he would say, ‘I heard’ or ‘So-and-so narrated to us,’ then pause briefly before adding, ‘Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Sulaymān al-Aʿmash.’”
