He narrated from Abū Mālik al-Ashjaʿī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Najīḥ al-Makkī, Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī, Ibn ʿAwn, Saʿīd al-Jurayrī, and a number of others.
Those who transmitted from him include Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, ʿAmr al-Nāqid, Ziyād ibn Ayyūb, ʿAlī ibn Muslim al-Ṭūsī, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah, and many more besides them.
Abū Dāwūd and others declared him trustworthy.
Ibn Saʿd said, “He was among the noblest of men in every respect.” He added, “He inclined toward Shīʿism, so al-Rashīd imprisoned him for a time and then released him, after which he remained in Baghdad.”
I (the author) say: I believe he had accompanied Ibrāhīm, and that is why he was jailed.
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah related: “Wakīʿ asked me about ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām and then remarked, ‘None of you has anyone comparable to him.’ ”
I (the author) say: He died in one of the years of the one-hundred-and-eighties AH.
