A ḥāfiẓ (hadith master), an authoritative proof, and an exemplar; Abū Muḥammad al-Kilābī, of Kūfa.
He transmitted from ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, al-Aʿmash, and a number of others.
Those who narrated from him include Aḥmad, Ibn Rāhwayh, Abū Khaythama, Abū Kuraib, Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj, and many more.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “He is trustworthy—reliable and then some—together with uprightness and severe poverty. He wore a tattered sheepskin cloak that was worth next to nothing.”
Aḥmad al-ʿIjli remarked, “Trustworthy, righteous, devoted to the Quran; he used to teach its recitation.”
I (the author) say: He passed away on the third of Rajab, 188 AH, in Kūfa. His kinsman, the hadith scholar Muḥammad ibn Rabīʿah al-Kilābī, led the funeral prayer.
