He (Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn) also declared him weak, and on another occasion he said, “I have never seen narrations sounder than those of ʿUbaydah al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, nor transmitters more reliable.”

Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah remarked, “He was not one of the exacting ḥuffāẓ (master memorisers).”

Saʿdawayh once mentioned him and said, “He owned a written compilation, he served as the tutor of al-Amīn, and he was a cobbler by trade.”

Ibn ʿAmmār stated, “Trustworthy.”

Zakariyyā al-Sājī said, “He is not strong, yet he is among the truthful. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal used to say, ‘He slips only rarely, and you will not find any taṣḥīf (copyist error) in his work,’ and he held him in very high esteem.”

Al-Nasāʾī and others said, “There is nothing wrong with him.”

Ibn Numayr reported, “I recited the Qur’an to him fifty years ago, and I wrote from him a ṣaḥīfa (notebook) on the authority of ʿAmmār al-Duhnī. Shurayk would consult him regarding legal issues.”

Ibn Saʿd said, “He is trustworthy, sound in ḥadīth, and skilled in grammar, Arabic language, and Qur’anic recitation. He came from Kūfa in the time of Hārūn, Commander of the Faithful, who placed him with his son Muḥammad; he remained with him until he died.”

Hārūn ibn Ḥātim related: “I asked ʿUbaydah ibn Ḥumayd, ‘When were you born?’ He replied, ‘In the year 107 AH.’ He further stated that he died in 190 AH.”

Muṭayyin likewise recorded that he died in 190 AH.
