in Mecca while you are boasting, ‘I have tricked Muhammad twice!’ ” He then gave orders and his neck was struck. It is also said that he was the only prisoner taken that day.
From Banū ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy two men fell: ʿUbayd ibn Jābir and Shaybah ibn Mālik.
Sulaymān ibn Bilāl related—from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Furwah, from Qaṭn ibn Wahb, from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, from Abū Hurayrah—and Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl likewise transmitted it from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, once as a mursal report and once with a complete isnād substituting Abū Dharr for Abū Hurayrah—that when the Prophet ﷺ was on his way back from Uḥud he passed by Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr, who lay dead on the path. He stopped, prayed for him, and then recited: “Among the believers are men who have been true to the covenant they made with Allah: some have fulfilled their vow, while others are still waiting, and they have never altered in the least” (Q 33:23). He then said, “I testify that these men are martyrs with Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Visit them and convey greetings to them, for by Him in whose hand is my soul, no one will salute them until the Day of Resurrection without their returning his greeting.”
Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me—and Buraidah ibn Sufyān also transmitted it from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb—that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw how Ḥamzah had been mutilated—his nose cut off and his body abused—he said, “Were it not that Ṣafiyyah would be overwhelmed with grief, and that it would become a practice after me, I would leave him unburied so that the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky might consume him.”
Buraidah further narrated from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If I prevail over Quraysh I will mutilate thirty of their men.” When the Companions saw the extent of his sorrow they said, “If we gain the upper hand, we shall mutilate them in a way no Arab has ever done to anyone.” Then Allah revealed: “And if you retaliate, retaliate only with the like of that with which you were afflicted …” (Q 16:126) to the end of the surah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forgave them.
