as well as al-Khadr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥammuyah and Ahmad ibn Abi ʿAsrun, from Abu l-Faraj ibn Kulayb. Abu l-Faraj reported to us; ʿAli ibn Bayān reported to us; Muhammad ibn Muhammad reported to us; Ismaʿil ibn Muhammad reported to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyash narrated to me, on the authority of Abu Ishaq, from al-Baraʾ ibn ʿAzib, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with his Companions and we entered ihram for the Hajj. When we reached Mecca he said, ‘Turn your Hajj into an ʿumrah.’ The people said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can we make it an ʿumrah when we have already entered ihram for Hajj?’ He replied, ‘Pay attention to what I command you and do it.’ They persisted in arguing, and he became angry. He then went off until he entered upon ʿAʾishah still angry. She saw the anger in his face and said, ‘Who has angered you? May Allah anger him.’ He said, ‘Why should I not be angry when I issue a command and it is not followed!’ ”
This is an authentic hadith with a high chain. A number of transmitters in our own time relate it from al-Najīb and Ibn ʿAbd al-Daʾim on the basis of their direct audition from Ibn Kulayb. Ibn Majah recorded it (1) through a trustworthy narrator from Abu Bakr.
ʿUthman ibn Abi Shaybah said: Harun al-Rashid summoned Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyash from Kufa. He arrived accompanied by Wakīʿ, and they entered while Wakīʿ was leading him by the hand. Al-Rashid brought him close and asked, “You witnessed the days of the Umayyads and our own days; which of us is better?” He replied, “You are more conscientious about the prayer, whereas they were more beneficial to the people.” Al-Rashid thereupon rewarded him with six thousand dinars and dismissed him, and he granted Wakīʿ three thousand. This was narrated by Muhammad ibn ʿUthman from his father.
