of al-Aʿmash who never left him: ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, and Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth.
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥulwānī narrates, through Muḥammad ibn Dāwūd: “I heard ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus say, ‘Al-Aʿmash related forty hadiths to us—hadiths that include striking the necks (capital punishment). No one shared them with me except Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq. At times al-Aʿmash would ask him, “Who is with you?” He would reply, “ʿĪsā.” Al-Aʿmash would then say, “Both of you come in and bolt the door.” ʿĪsā would question him about the hadith on tribulations.’”
Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā reports from al-Walīd ibn Muslim, who said, “I do not care who disagrees with me regarding al-Awzāʿī—except ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, for I have seen his mastery to be exact and thorough.”
Aḥmad ibn Janāb said, “ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus took part in forty-five military expeditions, and he performed the pilgrimage the same number of times.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, “I saw ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus wearing a padded qabaʾ and two red leather socks—that is, he was dressed in the garb of the soldiers.”
Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir al-Kindī said, “The Caliph al-Maʾmūn came to ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus and heard hadith from him. He offered him ten thousand, but ʿĪsā returned the money.”
Aḥmad ibn Janāb, Sulaymān ibn ʿAmr, ʿAlī ibn Baḥr, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar stated: “He died in 187 AH.”
Al-Madāʾinī, Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā, al-Dānī, and Muḥammad ibn Muṣaffā said: “(He died in) 188 AH.” Ibn Muṣaffā added, “in the middle of Shaʿbān.”
