and she ripped open Ḥamzah’s body, pulled out his liver and began to chew it. Unable to swallow, she spat it out. She then climbed a prominent rock and cried at the top of her voice:
We have repaid you for the Day of Badr—
War after war exacts a grievous price.
I could not bear the loss of ʿUtbah,
Nor of my brother, his uncle and my Bakr.
I have cooled my rage and fulfilled my vow;
You, Wahshī, have likewise quenched the fire in my breast.
According to Ibn Isḥāq, eleven men of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār were killed among the idolaters that day:
• Ṭalḥah, Abū Saʿīd and ʿUthmān—the sons of Abū Ṭalḥah ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā—and their freedman Ṣuʾāb;
• the sons of that Ṭalḥah: Musāfiʿ, al-Ḥārith, al-Jallās and Kilāb;
• Abū Zayd ibn ʿUmayr—the brother of Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr—together with their cousin Arṭātah ibn Sharḥabīl ibn Hāshim and their cousin Qāsiṭ ibn Sharīḥ.
From Banū Asad: ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥumayd ibn Zuhayr al-Asadī, and Sibāʿ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-Khuzaʿī, an ally of Banū Asad.
Four men of Banū Makhzūm fell: Hishām ibn Abī Umayyah ibn al-Mughīrah (Umm Salamah’s brother), al-Walīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Hishām ibn al-Mughīrah, Abū Umayyah ibn Abī Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Mughīrah, and their ally Khālid ibn al-Aʿlam.
From Banū Zuhrah: Abū al-Ḥakam ibn al-Akhnas ibn Shurayq, one of their allies.
From Banū Jumah: Ubayy ibn Khalaf, and Abū ʿAzzah ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmayr. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that Abū ʿAzzah be executed in captivity, for he had been seized at Badr and released without ransom because of his poverty after pledging not to aid the enemy. He broke that pledge and was captured again at Uḥud, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “By Allah, your cheeks shall never be wiped…”
