and Yaḥyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah?”
He replied, “Both of them are trustworthy.”
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr reported: “ʿAlī ibn Mus-hir used to come to me and ask, ‘How does such-and-such a hadith read?’ He had already buried his books.”
Yaḥyā added, “ʿAlī is more firmly grounded than Ibn Numayr.”
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjli stated, “ʿAlī ibn Mus-hir was a Qurashī of pure lineage. He combined expertise in hadith and jurisprudence and is reliable.”
Our shaykh Abū al-Ḥajjāj said, “He descends from Khuzaymah ibn Luʾayy ibn Ghālib; they are the clan known as ‘the Refuge of Quraysh.’”
Abū Zurʿah said, “Truthful, reliable.”
And Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn related: “He was appointed judge of Armīniyyah. When he set out for it, his eye began to hurt, so a physician kept attending him. The sitting judge in Armīniyyah said to the physician, ‘Apply a collyrium that will destroy his eye and I will give you such-and-such.’ The man applied something, the eye was lost, and ʿAlī returned to Kūfah blind.”
Abū Bakr ibn Manjawayh said, “He died in 189 AH.”
ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān and Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad informed us, saying: Mūsā son of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlī informed us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad informed us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Bundār informed us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhalliṣ told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī told us; ʿAlī ibn Mus-hir, the judge of Mosul, narrated to us from Saʿd ibn Ṭāriq, from Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh, from Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “My Basin is farther than Ayla and Aden; by Him in whose hand is my soul, its vessels are more numerous than the stars, it is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey…"
