and Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah, and others. One of his narrations is found with an elevated chain in the Juzʾ of Ibn ʿArafah. He is reliable and his ḥadith is sound. He died in 180 AH. He was the brother of Sufyān al-Thawrī.
127 – Muʿādh ibn Muslim Abū Muslim al-Kūfī *
The Kufan grammarian, Abū Muslim al-Kūfī, known as al-Harrāʾ, the client of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī.
He narrated from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib and others, yet he is not relied upon in ḥadith. Certain variant Qurʾānic readings were transmitted from him, and al-Kisāʾī studied under him.
It is said that he wrote works on Arabic, though nothing of them has surfaced. He was a Shiʿi and exceptionally long-lived; his children and grandchildren died while he was still alive. He humbled himself, and ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah said, “I saw him fastening his teeth with gold.”
