Sharahīl thereupon presented him with a qintar of gold.

126 – Mubārak ibn Saʿīd ibn Masrūq al-Thawrī ** (D, T)
The jurist and ḥadith scholar, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Thawrī, a Kufan who was blind and later settled in Baghdad.

(1) In Tabaqat al-shuʿaraʾ, p. 392, Ibn al-Muʿtazz relates that ʿAlī ibn al-Jahm used to hold poetic jousts with Marwān ibn Abī Ḥafṣa the Younger (nicknamed Abū l-Simṭ), exchanging poems of mutual satire. Public opinion split: a minority judged ʿAlī the better poet, while most preferred Marwān. Marwān then recited the following two verses:
“By your life, Jahm ibn Badr is no poet; / only his son pretends to compose verse.
My father once lived beside his mother; / when he passed on poems, he misled me.”
ʿAlī ibn al-Jahm replied with two lines of his own:
“A calamity like no other calamity: / the enmity of one without lineage or faith.
He feels free to attack an honour he never preserved, / and strikes at a protected honour of yours.”
The audience unanimously ruled in favour of Marwān, holding that ʿAlī’s couplet was no true rebuttal but rather a sign of capitulation.
