Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Bukhārī said, “He is a Qadari and a Jahmi; Ibn al-Mubārak and the rest of the scholars have abandoned him.”

Muʾammal ibn Ismāʿīl related, “I heard Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān say, ‘I bear witness that Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yaḥyā lies.’”

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Barqī said, “He was known—or, it was said of him—that he espoused the Qadari doctrine, inclined toward Shiʿism, and was guilty of lying.”

Al-Nasāʾī and others declared, “His ḥadith is to be abandoned.”

Al-ʿUqaylī reported: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Naḍr told us, Abu Bakr ibn ʿAffān told us, who said, “Ibn ʿUyaynah came out to us and announced, ‘Beware of Ibn Abī Rawwād the Murjiʾ; do not sit with him. And beware of Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yaḥyā; do not sit with him.’”

Abu Muḥammad al-Dārimī said, “I heard Yazīd ibn Hārūn declare Ziyād ibn Maymūn, Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yaḥyā, and Khālid ibn Maḥdūj to be liars.” (1)

Ibn Ḥibbān remarked, “The name of his grandfather Abū Yaḥyā was Samʿān.”

Mālik and Ibn al-Mubārak used to forbid narration from him, and he was abandoned by al-Qaṭṭān and Ibn Mahdī … until Ibn Ḥibbān concluded, “He fabricated ḥadith.” (2)

Hajjāj al-Aʿwar narrated—from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAṭāʾ, from Mūsā ibn Wardān, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever dies while ill dies a martyr, is spared the trial of the grave, and morning and evening receives his provision from Paradise.” (3)

(1) He is also known as Ibn Maqdouh; see al-Dhahabi, Mizan al-I‘tidal, vol. 1, p. 642. (2) Ibn Hibban, al-Majruhin wa-l-Duafa, vol. 1, p. 105. (3) Cited by Ibn Hibban in al-Majruhin, vol. 1, p. 106, and recorded by Ibn Majah (1615) in the Book of Funerals, chapter “On the one who dies while ill.” The chain of transmission is extremely weak because of Ibrahim b. Abi Yahya.
