and join us with the righteous, without disgrace or temptation. O Allah, battle the disbelievers who bar others from Your path and deny Your messengers; pour upon them Your wrath and Your punishment. O Allah, battle the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture—O God of Truth.”
This ḥadith is singular and objectionable; al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Adab from ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, from Marwān.
The Number of Martyrs:
We have already mentioned that al-Bukhārī transmitted—through the report of al-Barāʾ—that the idolaters struck down seventy of us.
Ḥammād ibn Salamah, on the authority of Thābit, from Anas, said: “O Lord, the seventy from the Anṣār: seventy on the Day of Uḥud, seventy at Biʾr Maʿūnah, seventy at Muʾtah, and seventy at al-Yamāmah.”
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥurmala, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, said: “Seventy men of the Anṣār were killed in three engagements—seventy at Uḥud, seventy at al-Yamāmah, and seventy at the Battle of the Bridge of Abū ʿUbayd.”
Ibn Jurayj said: “ʿUmar ibn ʿAṭāʾ informed me, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, regarding the verse, ‘You inflicted twice as much damage’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:165): the Muslims killed seventy of the idolaters at Badr and captured seventy, whereas the idolaters killed seventy Muslims at Uḥud.”
As for Ibn Lahīʿah, from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah, he said: “The total number killed alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Uḥud from the Quraysh and the Anṣār was four—or, he said, seven.”
