belonged to ʿĀʾishah. The Anṣār’s banner was known as “al-ʿUqāb.” ʿAlī commanded the right flank, while al-Mundhir ibn ʿAmr al-Sāʿidī held the left. Al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām led the infantry—some reports instead name al-Miqdād ibn ʿAmr—and Hamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was in charge of the center.
The Quraysh standard was first borne by Ṭalḥah ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, whom ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—killed. Saʿd ibn Abī Ṭalḥah then seized it, but Saʿd ibn Mālik killed him. Next ʿUthmān ibn Abī Ṭalḥah took it and was slain by ʿĀṣim ibn Thābit ibn Abī al-Aqlah, who also killed al-Jullās ibn Ṭalḥah when he lifted it after that. It was then taken by Kalāb and al-Ḥārith, the sons of Ṭalḥah, but Qazmān, the ally of Banū Ẓafar, killed them both. Arṭātah ibn ʿAbd Sharaḥbīl al-ʿAbdarī fell at the hands of Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr, and afterward Abū Yazīd ibn ʿUmayr al-ʿAbdarī—or, according to another account, an Abyssinian slave belonging to Banū ʿAbd al-Dār—picked up the banner, only to be killed by Qazmān.
Ibn Isḥāq states: “The standard was left on the ground; no one ventured to raise it, and Quraysh were routed.”
Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazārī reports: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ayman told us, saying: ʿUbayd ibn Rifāʿah al-Zurqī related to us from his father, who said: “On the Day of Uḥud, when the idolaters had turned away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Form ranks behind me so that I may extol my Lord.’ They stood behind him in orderly rows, and he declared:
‘O Allah, to You belongs all praise, completely. O Allah, none can withhold what You have spread forth, nor draw near whom You have kept distant, nor distance whom You have brought near; none can prevent what You give, nor give what You withhold. O Allah, pour out upon us Your blessings. I ask You for the lasting bliss that never wanes or disappears. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have granted us and the evil of what You have withheld from us. O Allah, make faith beloved to us and adorn it in our hearts; make disbelief, transgression, and disobedience hateful to us, and place us among the rightly guided. O Allah, cause us to die as Muslims and give us life…’
