Al-ʿIjlī said, “A Kufan, reliable, devout, a righteous man who later settled in Mecca.”
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh (1) ibn ʿAmmār remarked, “If only al-Fuḍayl would narrate to you what he truly knows.” Ibn ʿAmmār was asked, “Do you regard his narrations as authoritative?” He replied, “Glory be to Allah!”
Abū Ḥātim said, “Truthful.”
Al-Nasāʾī said, “Reliable, trustworthy, a righteous man.”
Al-Dāraquṭnī said, “Reliable.”
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd stated, “He was born in Khurāsān, in the district of Abiward. He came to Kūfah when he was already advanced in years and heard hadith from Manṣūr and others. Later he devoted himself to worship, moved to Mecca, and took up residence there until he died at the beginning of 187 AH, during the caliphate of Hārūn. He was reliable, noble, outstanding, devout, scrupulous, and prolific in hadith.”
Abū Wahb Muḥammad ibn Muzāḥim related, “I heard Ibn al-Mubārak say, ‘The most devoted worshiper I have ever met is ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād; the most scrupulous is al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ; the most knowledgeable is Sufyān al-Thawrī; and the most accomplished jurist is Abū Ḥanīfah—never have I seen his equal in fiqh.’”
Ibrāhīm ibn Shammās transmitted from Ibn al-Mubārak, who said, “To my mind, no one now walking the earth is superior to al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ.”
Naṣr ibn al-Mughīrah al-Bukhārī reported, “I heard Ibrāhīm ibn Shammās say, ‘I have seen the most learned in jurisprudence, the most scrupulous, and the most retentive of people—Wakīʿ, al-Fuḍayl, and Ibn al-Mubārak.’”
