Al-Musallam ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAllān wrote to us—others also conveyed the same—that Dāwūd ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Wakīl had informed them. They said:
“Abū al-Faḍl al-Urmawī related to us, and al-Fakhr ʿAlī ibn al-Bukhārī likewise wrote to us, saying:
‘Niʿmah daughter of ʿAlī ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī informed us; my grandfather transmitted—and the seven of them said:
“Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Muʿaddil narrated to us; Abū al-Faḍl ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Zuhrī narrated to us, who said:
‘Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-Firyābī told us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Balkhī related to us in Samarqand in the year 226 AH; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak informed us; Ibn Lahīʿah informed us; Abū al-Muṣʿab Mishraḥ ibn Hāʿān related to us, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir al-Juhanī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Most of the hypocrites in my community are its Qur’an reciters.’ (1)
“Using this same chain to al-Firyābī: Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us, from Mishraḥ … and he mentioned the same report.
“And with this same chain to al-Firyābī: Abū Bakr Saʿīd ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ṭālaqānī told me; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from al-Awzāʿī, from Hārūn ibn Riʾāb:
‘When ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr was on his death-bed he said, “Bring So-and-so—a man from Quraysh—for I once spoke to him concerning my daughter in words resembling a pledge, and I do not wish to meet Allah, Exalted is He, carrying a third of hypocrisy. I therefore call you to witness that I have now married her to him.”’
Hārūn is reliable, but he did not meet ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr.”
