so we pledged ourselves to kill him, yet we never managed to carry it out.
Al-Wāqidī said: What is firmly established with us is that the one who struck the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his cheeks was Ibn Qamiʿah, while the one who hit his lips and broke his incisor was ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān told me—on the authority of someone who related it to him—from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, who said, “By Allah, I have never been as eager to kill anyone as I was to kill ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ. To the best of my knowledge he was ill-tempered and despised by his own people, and what satisfied me concerning him was the statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘Allah’s wrath has grown severe against the one who bloodied the face of the Messenger of Allah.’”
Maʿmar narrated from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUthmān al-Jazarī, from Maqsam, that when ʿUtbah broke the Prophet’s incisor, the Prophet ﷺ supplicated: “O Allah, do not let a full year pass over him before he dies a disbeliever.” A year had not elapsed before he died an unbeliever and entered the Fire. This is a report with a broken chain.
Ibn Wahb reported: ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith told us that ʿUmar b. al-Sāʾib learned that the father of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—when the Prophet ﷺ was wounded on the Day of Uḥud—sucked the wound until it was clean and the flesh looked white. People said to him, “Spit it out.” He replied, “By Allah, I will never spit it out.” He then turned away and fought, and the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever wishes to look at a man of Paradise, let him look at this one.” He was then martyred.
Ibn Isḥāq said that Ḥassān b. Thābit composed the following verses:
When God requites a people for the deeds they have done,
And the All-Merciful, Lord of the horizons, grants them His aid,
My Lord disgraced you, ʿUtayb son of Mālik,
And sent upon you, before death, one of His bolts.
You stretched forth your right hand deliberately against the Prophet,
So you made his mouth bleed and the flashing blades cut you down.
Why did you not remember God and the dwelling to which
You will be taken on the day of a crushing calamity?
