the trust that had been placed with her; and, of all people, he most resembled ʿAbd Allah.
Abu Ḥafṣ al-Fallās and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: Ibn al-Mubārak was born in 118 AH.
Al-Ḥākim transmitted—through Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥammādī—saying: I heard Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Bāshānī say, I heard ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān say, “I heard ʿAbd Allah say: ‘I was born in 119 AH.’”
Al-Fasawī reported: Bishr ibn Abī al-Azhar narrated to us, saying: Ibn al-Mubārak said, “ʿAbd Allah ibn Idrīs reviewed the Sunan with me. I remarked, ‘The non-Arabs scarcely preserve that, but I do remember that I wore black when I was still a boy, at the time Abū Muslim rose up; he obliged everyone, young and old alike, to wear black.’ ”
Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād said: Ibn al-Mubārak often remained at home. Someone asked him, ‘Do you not feel lonely?’ He replied, ‘How could I feel lonely when I am in the company of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions!’
Aḥmad ibn Sinān al-Qaṭṭān said: I was informed that Ibn al-Mubārak came to Ḥammād ibn Zayd. When Ḥammād looked at him he was impressed by his bearing and asked, ‘Where are you from?’ He answered, ‘From Khurāsān, from Marw.’ He asked, ‘Do you know a man named ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘What has become of him?’ He responded, ‘It is he who is speaking to you.’ So Ḥammād greeted him and welcomed him warmly.
Ismāʿīl al-Khaṭṭabī said: I was told about Ibn al-Mubārak that he attended a session with Ḥammād ibn Zayd. The hadith scholars there said to Ḥammād, ‘Ask Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to narrate to us.’ He said, ‘O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, would you narrate to them? They have asked me.’ He replied, ‘Glory be to Allah, O Abū Ismāʿīl! Shall I narrate while you are present?’ Ḥammād said, ‘I adjure you by oath—you must do it.’
