have bloodied the face of their Prophet while he was summoning them to their Lord?” Thereupon the verse was revealed: “You have no part in the matter: He may turn to them in mercy or punish them, for they are indeed wrongdoers” (Q 3:128).
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated from his father, from Sahl ibn Saʿd: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wounded, one of his upper incisors was broken, and the mail-cap on his head was smashed. Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, began to wash away the blood while ʿAlī poured water over him with a shield. When Fāṭimah realized that the water only increased the flow of blood, she took a piece of matting, burned it until it turned to ash, then pressed the ash onto the wound, and the bleeding stopped. This was recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Muslim also transmits it through Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl, who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Uḥud—his incisor was broken and his helmet shattered,” and he mentioned the remainder of the report.
Maʿmar related from Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The wrath of Allah has become severe against a people who did this to the Messenger of Allah”—and he pointed to his incisor—“and the wrath of Allah has become severe against a man slain by the Messenger of Allah in the path of Allah.” Agreed upon.
Al-Bukhārī records the same wording through ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, but it reads: “They bloodied the face of the Messenger of Allah,” instead of mentioning his incisor.
Ibn al-Mubārak narrated from Isḥāq ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh: ʿĪsā ibn Ṭalḥah informed me, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: Whenever Abū Bakr remembered the Day of Uḥud he would weep and say, “That day in its entirety belonged to Ṭalḥah.” He would then begin to recount the events, saying:
