105 – ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim Salama ibn Dīnār al-Madanī * (ʿ)
A leading imām and jurist, Abū Tammām al-Madanī.
He narrated from: his father, Zayd ibn Aslam, al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, Yazīd ibn al-Hādī, Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, and many others.
Those who transmitted from him include: al-Ḥumaydī, Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr, Abū Muṣʿab, al-Qaʿnabī, ʿAlī ibn Ḥajar, ʿAmr al-Nāqid, Yaʿqūb al-Dawraqī, Yaḥyā ibn Aktham, and numerous others.
He was counted among the foremost scholars of Medina.
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said: “Trustworthy.”
Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr reported: It was said to Muṣʿab al-Zubayrī, “Ibn Abī Ḥāzim is weak in the hadith he relates from his father.”
He replied, “Have they really said that? He used to study alongside Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, and when Sulaymān died he bequeathed his books to him. Those books remained with ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, but mice urinated on them and some parts were lost. He would read whatever was still legible and leave what he could not make out. As for the hadith of his father, he knew it by heart.”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: “After Mālik, no one in Medina was more versed in jurisprudence than ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim.”
