Ibn Ḥibbān says in al-Thiqāt: “He was extreme in his Shiʿite leanings and related objectionable reports from well-known narrators.”
Such are Ibn Ḥibbān’s words.
Ibrāhīm ibn al-Darjī informed me—in a recitation before him—saying: Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaydalānī and others, with formal authorization, told us:
Fāṭimah bint ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn Raydhah narrated to us; al-Ṭabarānī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Saqaṭī narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Hāshim narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from Thābit, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from his father, reported—
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade killing the house-dwelling snakes and said:
“If you see any of them in your homes, say: ‘We adjure you by the covenant Noah took from you, and we adjure you by the covenant Solomon took from you. If they return after that, then kill them.’”
This chain is singular (gharīb), and al-Tirmidhī graded it “good” (hasan) (1), transmitting it through Hannād, from Ibn Abī Zāʾidah, from Ibn Abī Laylā.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: “I heard ʿAlī ibn Hāshim once in the year 179 AH; when I returned for the next session he had died—that was the very year Mālik died.”
Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā said: “He died in 180 AH.”
Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah and Muṭayyan said: “He died in 181 AH.”
