had seen ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth.
He narrated from: his own father, Muḥārib ibn Dithār, Abū Bishr Jaʿfar ibn Iyās, Ḥafṣ the nephew of Anas, Abū Hāshim al-Rummānī, and several others.
Those who transmitted from him include: Qutaybah, ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr, Shurayḥ ibn Yūnus, and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah; even senior scholars such as Hushaym reported from him.
Abū Ḥātim said, “He is truthful.”
Ibn ʿAdī remarked, “I hope there is nothing wrong with him.”
Ibn Saʿd stated, “His state changed before his death and he became confused.”
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “I saw him—someone set him down and he cried out (1). He was then asked about a hadith, but I could not understand what he said.”
Ibn Maʿīn said, “There is no harm in him.”
Khalaf related, “ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz assigned me a stipend when I was eight years old.”
I (the author) say: This disproves his claim to have met ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth.
He died in 181 AH.
