ʿAbd Allah said, “I do not like your slaves to be your callers to prayer.”
In fact, the report is transmitted through Wāṣil, from Qabīṣah.
Ziyād ibn Ayyūb said, “Ibn Abī Zāʾidah held the judgeship of al-Madāʾin for four months, then he died, and he used to narrate from memory.”
Yaʿqūb al-Sadūsī said, “He died in al-Madāʾin while serving as judge for the Commander of the Believers, Hārūn; his death was in 183 AH.”
He lived sixty-three years.
He was trustworthy and his narrations were good. People used to say he was the first to compile books in Kūfah, and he was counted among the jurist-traditionists there. His death occurred in Jumādā al-Ūlā.
Hārūn ibn Ḥātim, Ibn Saʿd, Muṭayyin, and others said that he died in 183 AH.
Khalīfah said, “In 183 or 184 AH.”
Masrūq ibn al-Marzubān and Ibn Qāniʿ said, “In 184 AH.”
ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus said, “I saw Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah come to Mujālid, and he would say to Yaḥyā—meaning his own son—‘My boy, memorize.’”
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Qudāmah and al-Muslim ibn Muḥammad told us: Ḥanbal ibn ʿAbd Allah told us, Hibat Allah ibn al-Ḥuṣayn told us, Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Mudhhib told us, Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar told us, ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us, who said:
ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal informed me, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “If your shot falls into the water and the game drowns, then do not eat it.”
This is a sound, singular ḥadīth.
It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1) through Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī, from Aḥmad, but in that version the chain is two levels higher.
