and Ghifār. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came out to us from a tent—or perhaps a pavilion—gestured with his hand three times, and, taking ʿAlī’s hand—may Allah be pleased with him—declared: “Whoever has me as his mawla (leader and patron), ʿAlī is his mawla.”(1)

This is a ḥasan (good) hadith with a very elevated chain, and its wording is mutawātir (mass-transmitted).

= At the station of al-Juhfa—some say three miles before reaching it. The author of al-Masharaq adds that Khumm is the name of a small wooded area in that region; a pool (ghadir) there took its name from it. He further notes: Khumm is the spot where a spring flows, and between the spring and the pool stood the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (1) Sound hadith.
