so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed him a palm-rib, and in ʿAbd Allāh’s hand it turned into a sword. Its chain is mursal (with a missing link).
Khārijah ibn Zayd ibn Thābit relates—on the authority of his father—that he said: “On the Day of Uḥud the Prophet ﷺ sent me to look for Saʿd ibn ar-Rabīʿ and instructed me: ‘If you find him, convey my greetings of peace and say: The Messenger of Allah asks you, “How do you find yourself?”’
“I walked around among the slain until I discovered him breathing his last; he had received seventy wounds. I said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ conveys peace to you and says: “Tell me, how do you find yourself?”’ He answered, ‘Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah—and upon you. Say to him: O Messenger of Allah, I can already smell the fragrance of Paradise. And say to my people, the Anṣār: you will have no excuse before Allah if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is harmed while even a single one of you can still blink an eye.’ Then his soul departed.”
Al-Bayhaqī transmitted this report, and later cited it again through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān al-Māzinī, with a broken chain; thus it corroborates Khārijah’s version.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah said: “The idolaters then turned back toward their baggage, and the Muslims did not know what they intended. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘If you see them mount up and make the baggage follow the tracks of the horses, they mean to draw near the houses and the fortified buildings where the children are; and by Allah, if they do that, I will fight them inside those dwellings. But if they mount the baggage and keep the horses to one side, then they mean to flee.’
“When they turned away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ in pursuit. When he returned he said, ‘I saw them moving on with their baggage while the horses were being led alongside.’ At that the companions’ hearts were put at ease, and they scattered to search for their dead. They did not find a single slain man who had not been mutilated, except Ḥanẓalah ibn Abī ʿĀmir; his father was with the idolaters, so they left him untouched.
“They claim that his father stood over the corpse, nudged his chest with his foot and said, ‘Two offences you committed; I had already warned you about…’”
