ibn Samurah al-Suwaʾi. Jabir was one of the confederates of the Banu Zuhrah, and for that reason al-Muttalib was called al-Qurashi.
He was regarded as one of the senior hadith transmitters of Kufa and was born before 100 AH.
He narrated from Ziyad ibn ʿIlaqah, Ismaʿil al-Suddi, Abu Ishaq, ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAqil, ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn ʿUmayr—the client of Ibn Masʿud—Zayd ibn ʿAli ibn al-Husayn, Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, and others.
He was neither copious in transmission nor a ḥāfiẓ (hadith master), yet he was truthful: a man of hadith and sound understanding.
Among those who reported from him are Ibn al-Mubarak, Yusuf ibn ʿAdi, Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, Ahmad, Ishaq, Ibn Maʿin, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and his brother ʿUthman, Suwayd ibn Saʿid, Abu Ghassan al-Nahdi, Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Numayr, Abu Saʿid al-Ashajj, Shurayh ibn Yunus, Ibrahim ibn Musa al-Farraʾ, Sufyan ibn Wakiʿ, ʿAli ibn al-Hasan al-Tamimi al-Razi, Kuraʿ, Abu Hisham al-Rifaʿi, Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani, and many others.
Ahmad and Ibn Maʿin said, “He is reliable.”
Ahmad also remarked, “In Kufa we did not meet anyone older than him and ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd.”
Abu Hatim said, “His narrations are not taken as proof.”
Abu Dawud said, “In my view he is acceptable.”
