He fought until he was wounded and was carried away injured. Saʿd ibn Muʿādh came to him and said to his sister, “Ask him: was it out of zeal for your clan, or out of anger for Allah?” He replied, “Rather, it was anger for Allah and His Messenger.” He died and entered Paradise without ever having performed a single prayer. Abū Dāwūd recorded this report.
Haywah ibn Shurayh al-Miṣrī said: Abū Ṣakhr Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād narrated to me that Yaḥyā ibn al-Naḍr narrated to him from Abū Qatādah, who said: ʿAmr ibn al-Jamūḥ came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, “Messenger of Allah, if I fight in Allah’s cause until I am killed, will I walk in Paradise with this leg of mine sound?”—he was lame. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Yes.” He was killed on the Day of Uhud together with his nephew and their freedman. As the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by them he said, “It is as though I can see you walking with this leg of yours sound in Paradise.” He then ordered that the three of them be buried in a single grave.
Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Ibn al-Musayyib, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jahsh prayed, “O Allah, I solemnly entreat You to let me meet the enemy tomorrow so that they kill me, rip open my belly, and cut off my nose and ears; then, when You ask me, ‘For what was this done to you?’ I will answer, ‘For Your sake.’” Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib remarked, “I hope Allah granted him the last part of his oath just as He granted the first.”
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār relates in al-Muwaffaqiyyāt that the sword of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jahsh broke, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ handed him a palm-rib that turned into a sword in his hand. It came to be called al-ʿUrjūn (The Palm-Rib) and remained in use until it was sold to Bughā the Turk for 200 dinars. ʿAbd Allāh was among the earliest believers: he accepted Islam before the gathering in the House of al-Arqam, migrated to Abyssinia with his brothers, and fought at Badr.
Maʿmar narrated from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jahshī: our elders told us that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jahsh came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Uhud after his sword had been lost.
