Ibn Isḥāq said: Yahyā ibn ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me—on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather, from al-Zubayr—who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that day wearing two coats of mail. He was unable to climb up to a rock on the mountain, so Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh crouched beneath him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stepped on him until he had mounted the rock. The Prophet ﷺ then said, ‘Ṭalḥah has assured himself of Paradise.’”
Hamīd and others transmitted from Anas, who said: “Anas ibn al-Naḍr—the uncle of Anas ibn Mālik—had missed the fighting at Badr and declared, ‘I was absent from the first battle in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought the idolaters. If Allah lets me witness another combat, He will see what I do.’ When the Day of Uhud came and the Muslims fell back, he cried, ‘O Allah, I disown what these people—meaning the idolaters—have brought, and I plead for Your pardon concerning what these people—meaning the Muslims—have done in retreating.’ Then he advanced with his sword until Saʿd ibn Muʿādh met him. He said, ‘O Saʿd, I can smell the fragrance of Paradise beyond Uhud—ah, what a fragrance of Paradise!’ Saʿd later said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I was unable to do what he did.’”
Anas ibn Mālik continued: “We found him among the slain with more than eighty wounds—blows of swords, thrusts of spears, and shots of arrows. We did not recognize him; his sister identified him only by his fingertips. We used to say that the verse, ‘Among the believers are men who have been true to the covenant they made with Allah’ (al-Aḥzāb 33:23), was revealed about him and his companions.” Agreed upon; however, Muslim records it through Thābit al-Bunnānī from Anas.
Muhammad ibn ʿAmr narrated—through Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah—that ʿAmr ibn Uqaysh had money due to him from usury in the pre-Islamic period and disliked becoming Muslim before collecting it. On the Day of Uhud he asked, “Where are my relatives?” They answered, “At Uhud.” He put on his armor, mounted his horse, and headed toward them. When the Muslims saw him they said, “Stay away from us!” He replied, “I have embraced faith.”
