and he was saying to Hushaym, “May Allah reward you on behalf of my ummah with goodness.”
I asked Maʿrūf, “Did you really see that?”
He replied, “Yes. Hushaym is better than we imagine.”
Aḥmad ibn Abī Khaythamah said: Sulaymān ibn Abī Shaykh narrated to us, Abu Sufyān al-Himyarī narrated to us, from Hushaym, who said: “Al-Zubayr—may Allah be pleased with him—came to Kufa during the caliphate of ʿUthmān, while Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ was governor of the city. Saʿīd sent him seven hundred thousand, saying, ‘Had there been more than this in the public treasury I would have sent it to you.’ Al-Zubayr accepted the money.”
Aḥmad continued: I relayed this to Muṣʿab ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and he said, “In our view the one who sent the money was al-Walīd ibn ʿUqbah, and we used to commend them for that. Yet Hushaym knows best.”
Abu Sufyān said: I asked Hushaym about Qurʾanic exegesis—how did disagreement arise in it? He replied, “They interpreted on the basis of their own opinions, so they differed.”
Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Harawī said: “Hushaym and Ibn ʿUyaynah heard from al-Zuhrī in the year 123 AH, in the month of Dhu al-Ḥijjah. Sufyān said: ‘He stayed with us until the ʿumrah of Muḥarram, then went to al-Jiʿrānah (1), performed ʿumrah from there, departed, and died that same year.’”
Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Harawī also cited a report and remarked: “Hushaym did not hear it from al-Zuhrī. In fact, he related only four hadiths from him directly, among them: the hadith of the Saqīfa (2), the hadith of al-muḍāmīn and al-malāqīḥ (3), and the hadith of ‘whatever can be obtained of…’”}
