he said to me, “If you are neither a Qadarite nor a Murji’ite, I will narrate to you; otherwise I will not.”
I replied, “I hold to neither of those doctrines.”
Muslim writes in the introduction to his Ṣaḥīḥ: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Quhzād narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq al-Ṭālqānī, who said: “I asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, ‘Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, what do you say about the report that says, “Part of the continuing duty of filial devotion is that you pray for your parents along with your own prayer and fast on their behalf along with your own fast”?’
He replied, ‘Abū Isḥāq, from whom is this?’
I said, ‘From Shihāb ibn Khirāsh.’
He said, ‘Trustworthy. From whom?’
I said, ‘From al-Ḥajjāj ibn Dīnār.’
He said, ‘Trustworthy. From whom?’
I said, ‘[He states:] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said…’
He responded, ‘Between al-Ḥajjāj and the Prophet ﷺ are stretches of desert over which the necks of camels would break, yet there is no disagreement about the virtue of charity.’ (1)
Abū Dāwūd included two of Shihāb’s ḥadiths in his Sunan.
He passed away sometime before 180 AH, so ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr was able to meet him.
Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh informed us—through Zaynab al-Shāʿiriyyah—who was told by Fāṭimah bint Zaʿbal; Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Fārisī narrated to us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān reported to us; al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān related; Suwayd ibn Saʿīd narrated; Shihāb ibn Khirāsh, from Muḥammad ibn Ziyād, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Prophet ﷺ declared: “Allah has cursed the Murji’ites and the Qadarites upon the tongue of seventy prophets.” (2)
