74 – Abū al-Aḥwaṣ Salām ibn Sulaym al-Ḥanafī, their client * (ʿ)

An imām, reliable ḥāfiẓ: Salām ibn Sulaym al-Ḥanafī, their client, from Kūfah.

He narrated from: Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah; al-Aswad ibn Qays; Ādam ibn ʿAlī; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ; Saʿīd ibn Masrūq; Simāk ibn Ḥarb; Abū Isḥāq; Ibrāhīm ibn Muhājir; Abū Bishr, Bayān ibn Bishr; Ashʿath ibn Abī al-Shaʿthāʾ; Shabīb ibn Gharqadah; Abū Ḥuṣayn; Manṣūr; ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb; and ʿAbd

(1) The hadith is reported by Abu Dawud (3925) in the Book of Medicine, al-Tirmidhi (1818) in the Book of Foods, and Ibn Majah (3542) in the Book of Medicine, through the chain of transmission: Mufaddal b. Fadala – Habib b. al-Shahid – Muhammad b. al-Munkadir – Jabir. The Prophet ﷺ took the hand of a man afflicted with leprosy, placed it with his own in the dish, and said: “Eat, trusting in Allah and relying on Him.” The isnad is weak because Mufaddal b. Fadala is unreliable. In addition, the report contradicts the hadith recorded by Muslim in his Sahih (2231), Book of Greetings, chapter “Avoiding the leper,” where al-Shurayd relates that a leper was among the delegation of Thaqif, and the Prophet ﷺ sent word: “We have accepted your pledge; return home.” Al-Bukhari cites a similar wording in suspended form (10/132), and Abu Nuaym supplies the full chain from Abu Hurayra: “Flee from the leper as you flee from a lion.” (*) Main biographical sources for the narrator: Ibn Saad, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 6/379; Khalifa, Tarikh 451 and Tabaqat 169; al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-kabir 4/135 and al-Tarikh al-saghir 2/218; Ibn Qutayba, al-Maarif 509; Yaqub, al-Maarifa wa-l-tarikh 1/171; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-tadil 4/259; al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-kamal 565; al-Dhahabi, Tadhhib al-tahdhib 2/66/1; al-Dhahabi, Tadhkirat al-huffaz 1/605; Ibn Hajar, Mizaan al-itaḍal 2/176; al-Dhahabi, al-Ibar 1/274; Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-tahdhib 4/283; al-Khazraji, Khulasat tadhhib al-kamal 160; Ibn al-Imad, Shadharat al-dhahab 1/292.
