Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and Abū Bishr—Jaʿfar ibn Abī Waḥshiyyah—al-Jurayrī, ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿAmmārah al-Māzinī, Muṭarrif ibn Ṭarīf, Wāṣil the client of Abū ʿUyaynah, Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, Sulaymān al-Taymī, Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, Abū Isḥāq al-Shaybānī, Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī, Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, many others, and Abū Ḥuṣayn. I do not think he ever heard anything from al-Aʿmash.

Those who transmitted from him include: Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Wakīʿ, Ibn Mahdī, Musaddad, Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, Abū ʿUmar al-Ḥawḍī, Saʿīd ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ṭalqānī, Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Dūlābī, ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn, Muḥammad ibn Salām al-Bīkandī, Muḥammad ibn Muqātil al-Marwazī, Muʿallā ibn Manṣūr, Wahb ibn Baqiyyah, Qutaybah, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bayān, Isḥāq ibn Shāhīn, and many others besides them.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal related: My father said, “Khālid the miller was trustworthy and upright in his religion. It has reached me that he ransomed himself for Allah’s sake three times, and he is dearer to us than Hushaym.”

ʿAbd Allāh also reported that his father said, “Khālid was among the finest of Muslims; he ransomed his own soul for Allah four times, giving in charity silver equal to his own weight on each occasion.”

Ibn Saʿd, Abū Zurʿah, Abū Ḥātim, and al-Nasāʾī all said: “Trustworthy.”

Al-Tirmidhī said: “Trustworthy, a ḥadith master.”

Abū Ḥātim further remarked: “His narrations are sound.”

Abū Dāwūd reported that Isḥāq al-Azraq said, “I never met anyone better than Khālid the miller.”

Someone asked him, “But you met Sufyān, did you not?”

He replied, “Sufyān was a man concerned with his own state, whereas Khālid was a man for the public at large.”
