Others were seized as well—Abū Kaʿb and his brother, the judge Mālik ibn Yazīd, Mūsā ibn Sālim al-Khawlānī, Yaḥyā ibn Muḍar the jurist, and many of their peers among the people of knowledge and piety—seventy-seven men in all. Their necks were struck and they were hung upon crosses.

To them he even added his two uncles, Kulayb and Umayya; they too were crucified. Hearts blazed with grief for them, and news of their fate was carried far and wide by travellers. Al-Ḥakam realized that he had become the object of universal resentment, so he began mustering troops and retainers, making every preparation, while the common folk seethed. The people became as bold as lions, fierce as leopards, and readied themselves for battle.

It so happened that a palace slave (1) came out of the citadel with a sword to hand it to the armourer. The armourer delayed, so the slave cursed him; the armourer answered back, they traded blows, and the slave beat him to the brink of death. When the slave turned away, the armourer snatched up the sword and killed him with it. A crowd gathered around the slain man and another around the killer, and the trouble swelled.

This occurred in Ramadan of the year 202 AH. The people of Cordoba rallied from their outlying districts, armed themselves, and marched on the palace. Al-Ḥakam and the army mounted and routed the mob, but a second force came upon them from the rear and fell upon them with the sword. It was a dreadful, horrific engagement: well over forty thousand inhabitants of the suburb perished. Affliction faced them from front and back, so they cried out for peace, submitted, and sought pardon. Al-Ḥakam granted them clemency on condition that they leave Cordoba. They complied; their houses and mosques were demolished.

Thousands of them settled in Toledo, others along the frontier, yet others crossed the sea to the land of the Berbers. One group remained in Fes and built on its coast a town that came to be known predominantly as “the City of al-Andalus.” Another contingent of about fifteen thousand then set out
