Abū Dāwūd said, “Trustworthy, trustworthy.”
I (the author) say: He died in 178 AH.
Ahmad ibn Hibat Allāh told us; Abū Rūḥ al-Harawī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl informed us; Muḥallim ibn Ismāʿīl informed us; al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad informed us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Qutaybah narrated to us; ʿAbthar ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us, from Ashʿath, from Muḥammad, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever dies owing a month of fasting, let a needy person be fed on his behalf for every day.”(1)
It was transmitted by al-Tirmidhī from Qutaybah, and by Ibn Mājah from al-Dhuhlī, from Qutaybah.
Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “The sound version is mawqūf.” ‘Muḥammad’ here is Ibn Abī Laylā—some say Ibn Sīrīn—and ‘Ashʿath’ is Ibn Sawwār.
