Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī said, “Among his companions he had the sharpest eye for hadith and for the narrators.”

Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī stated, “People say that after Shuʿbah no one knew more about the transmitters than he did.”

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd reported, “Wuhaib was once imprisoned, and there he lost his sight. He was trustworthy and authoritative; he would dictate from memory and his retention surpassed that of Abū ʿAwānah.”

Al-Bukhārī transmitted—through Aḥmad ibn Abī Rajāʾ al-Harawī—that Wuhaib died in the year 165 AH.

Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “He lived for fifty-eight years.”

Aḥmad ibn Abī Khaythamah related: Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl told us, “I said to Ḥammād ibn Salamah, ‘Wuhaib ibn Khālid claims that ʿAlī ibn Zayd did not preserve hadith accurately.’ Ḥammād replied, ‘Was Wuhaib even able to sit with ʿAlī? Only the leading figures could sit with him.’ I said, ‘That is no answer, and Wuhaib is right.’”

Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān remarked, “Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ and Ibn ʿUlayyah are more firmly reliable than Wuhaib.”

Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal also said, “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (ibn Mahdī) preferred Wuhaib to Ismāʿīl in everything.”

Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj narrated to us—through Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd—that they used to say, “The master memorisers (ḥuffāẓ) are four: Ibn ʿUlayyah, ʿAbd al-Wārith, Wuhaib, and Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ,” and that “they would transmit the wording exactly.”

I have not obtained a high-level isnād for Wuhaib’s hadith except by way of an ijāzah (formal licence).
