Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

40 – Wuhaib ibn Khalid ibn ʿAjlan al-Karābisī (marked by the author as reliable)
A leading ḥāfiẓ and exacting critic; Abū Bakr al-Baṣrī, al-Karābisī, a client of the Banū Bāhila.
He is actually junior to the scholars of this tier, yet we have listed him with them because he died early.
He passed away before Ḥammād ibn Salamah.

He transmitted ḥadith from: Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir, Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, Abū Ḥāzim, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Suhayb, Manṣūr ibn Ṣafiyyah, Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, Khuthaym ibn ʿIrāk, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭāwūs, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Sulaymān al-Taymī, Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, and many of their contemporaries.

Reported from him were: Ibn al-Mubārak, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah, Ibn Mahdī, ʿAffān ibn Muslim, Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb, ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād, Muʿallā ibn Asad, Abū al-Walīd, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ghiyāth, Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥajjāj, ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿAyshī, Abū Salamah al-Tabūdhakī, ʿĀrim, Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm, Hudbah ibn Khālid, and a number of others.

The difference between the two is that a human being poses questions and gives answers within a limited range; once he follows the proper method and attains the conclusive proof, he stops. Satan’s whisperings, by contrast, have no endpoint: whenever he is confronted with a proof, he shifts to another, until he drives a person into bewilderment—we seek refuge in Allah from this. Moreover, his question “Who created Allah?” is incoherent, for its conclusion undermines its premise: the Creator cannot, by definition, be created.
