Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

him say, “Isra’il is more reliable than Sharik.”
He added, “Yahya al-Qattan would not transmit from either of the two.”

Minjab ibn al-Harith reported: A man asked Sharik, “How are you feeling, Abu ʿAbd Allah?”
He replied, “I feel ill, (1) yet I lodge no complaint against Allah.”

Ahmad ibn Abi Khaythama related: Yahya ibn Ayyub told us, “We were with Sharik one day when some of the hadith students behaved rudely. Sharik rebuked a few of them. One of the men said, ‘Abu ʿAbd Allah, if only you would be gentle.’
Sharik placed his hand on the shaykh’s knee and said, ‘Refinement is an aid to the religion.’”

Ibn ʿUyaynah said: Someone asked Sharik, “What do you say about a person who gives ʿAli precedence over Abu Bakr?”
He answered, “Then he has disgraced himself, for he is claiming that the Muslims were mistaken.”

Wakiʿ reported, “I recorded nothing from Sharik after he became a judge; in my view those narrations stand apart.”

Abu Nuʿaym said, “I wrote down only a single hadith from him after he took the judgeship.”

Al-Baghawi narrated: ʿAbbas ibn Muhammad told us, and I heard Yahya say, “Sharik issued a judgment against Ibn Idris in a certain matter. Ibn Idris objected, saying, ‘The proper ruling in this case is such-and-such’—meaning what you yourself have judged. Sharik replied, ‘Go and give that fatwa to your peers in al-Zaʿafir.’
Sharik had detained him over the lawsuit, and Ibn Idris lived in al-Zaʿafir.”

Mansur ibn Abi Muzahim said: I heard Sharik remark, “Leaving a question unanswered when an answer is called for melts the heart.”
