Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Musarhad, Bishr ibn Hilal, Ishaq ibn Abi Isra’il, Muhammad ibn Sulayman Luwayn, and many others.

He was regarded as one of the devout worshippers and scholars of the Shiʿah. After performing the Hajj he travelled on to Yemen; ʿAbd al-Razzāq accompanied him there, narrated abundantly from him, and himself inclined toward Shiʿism.

It is reported that Jaʿfar adopted Rāfiḍī views. He was asked, “Do you curse Abu Bakr and ʿUmar?” He answered, “No, but—bugdan yā laka (I bear them aversion, woe to you).” Yet this wording is not soundly attributed to him.

Al-Hāfiẓ Zakariyyā al-Sāji explained that by the phrase “bugdan yā laka” he only meant two neighbours who used to annoy him and whose names happened to be Abu Bakr and ʿUmar.

Ibn al-Madīnī said: “He narrated extensively from Thābit al-Bunānī and recorded from him mursal reports in which there are some anomalous narrations.”

Ibn Saʿd said: “Reliable, though some weakness is found in him.”

Muhammad ibn ʿUthmān al-ʿAbsi reported from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn who said: “Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān would neither transmit from Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān nor write down his hadith, although in our estimation he was trustworthy.”

Aḥmad ibn al-Miqdām said: “We were in the session of Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ when he declared, ‘Whoever goes to Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān or ʿAbd al-Wārith, let him not come near me.’” ʿAbd al-Wārith, he noted, was considered to lean toward the Muʿtazilah.

ʿAbbās narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn that he said: “Trustworthy.”

Muhammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddamī said: “I heard my uncle ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī say: I saw Ibn al-Mubārak say to Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān, ‘Did you ever see Ayyūb?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ He said…”
