the Egyptian, a freedman of the governor Sharḥabīl ibn Ḥasana (may Allah be pleased with him).
He was born in the year 100 AH.
He transmitted ḥadith from Abū Qabīl al-Maʿāfirī, Jaʿfar ibn Rabīʿa, Yazīd ibn al-Hādī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, and others.
Those who narrated from him include his son Isḥāq ibn Bakr, Ibn Wahb, Ibn al-Qāsim, Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd, and many more.
He was counted among the reliable and devout.
Al-Ḥārith ibn Miskīn said, “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim would put no one in Fusṭāṭ ahead of him. I saw him when I was still young, and his son Isḥāq related to me, saying:
‘I never saw my father sit in the house on a padded rug; he would sit only on a simple reed mat.
He was often sorrowful, though at times his spirits would lift and he would rejoice. A man might come to ask him a question; he would teach him, then lapse back into his usual state, change colour, and say, “What have I to do with this?”
We would ask, “Shall we send the man away?” and he would reply, “Would that be lawful for me?”
At times young men came to him seeking ḥadith, and he would tell them, “First learn piety.”’”
Ibn Yūnus and others said: He died on the Day of ʿArafah in the year 154 AH.
