Mulaykah, ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, Zayd ibn Aslam, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim, Ibn ʿAqīl, Suhayl, and a number of others.
Those who narrated from him include al-Walīd ibn Muslim, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī, Abū Dāwūd, Rūḥ ibn ʿUbadah, ʿAmr ibn Abī Salamah, Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī, a large group besides them, and Abū Ḥudhayfah al-Nahdī.
Al-Bukhārī and others said: “The Syrians transmit from him reports that are objectionable.”
I say: ʿAmr ibn Abī Salamah al-Tinnīsī likewise relates from him objectionable reports; he is neither strong nor precise, even though the compilers of the six canonical books recorded ḥadith from him.
Abū Jaʿfar al-ʿUqaylī listed him in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ and quoted Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal: “His ḥadith is of middling reliability.”
He added: “It seems that the Zuhayr from whom the people of Syria narrate is another man whose name has been confused.” (1)
Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ reported from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn: “He is a Khurasānī—weak.”
Al-ʿUqaylī then said: “Among his narrations is what Aḥmad ibn al-Naṣībī told us—Isḥāq ibn Zayd al-Khaṭṭābī told us—Muḥammad ibn Sulaym told us—Zuhayr ibn Muḥammad Abū al-Mundhir told us—Suhayl, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Fast and you will remain healthy; travel and you will remain healthy; and fight (in jihad) and you will profit.’ (2)”
He then commented: “It is not corroborated except through a chain that is soft.”
Al-Nasāʾī said: “He is not strong.”
