—this dog!’
He said: She then placed a wooden plank between her house and the house of ʿUthmān, carrying food and drink across it.
This report reached us through al-Fakhr ibn al-Bukhārī, who was informed by Ibn Tabarzad, who was told by ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, who was told by Ibn Hazārmard, who was told by Ibn Ḥabābah, who was told by al-Baghawī, who said: ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd related to us, saying: Zuhayr narrated to us from Kinānah … and he mentioned the incident.
Zuhayr also transmitted from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Ibrāhīm ibn Muhājir, ʿUrwah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Qushayr, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ, and others.
Aḥmad ibn Abī Khaythamah said: I heard Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn state, “Zuhayr’s memory surpasses that of Isrāʾīl, though both are trustworthy.”
Ibn Abī Khaythamah also said: I heard Saʿīd ibn Qudayd say, “I heard Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb remark, ‘I was with Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah in Baṣrah when he said, O Shuʿayb! I do not record a hadith except with a conscious intention.’ We stayed in Baṣrah and ended up writing down only a single hadith.”
Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb said: I heard Ḥamīd al-Ruʾāsī say, “Whenever Zuhayr heard a hadith from a transmitter twice, he would write beside it, ‘Finished.’”
Muʿādh ibn Muʿādh said, “Once I have heard a hadith from Zuhayr, I am indifferent as to whether I ever hear it from Sufyān al-Thawrī.”
Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb the devotee said: “One day Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb narrated to us a hadith from Zuhayr and another from Shuʿbah. Someone asked, ‘Do you give precedence to Zuhayr over Shuʿbah?!’ He replied, ‘Zuhayr’s memory was better than that of twenty men like Shuʿbah.’
“He went on: Zuhayr once came to Shuʿbah and requested him to dictate a lengthy hadith. Shuʿbah refused, saying, ‘I will repeat it to you until you memorize it.’ Zuhayr answered, ‘I hope I can memorize it, but before I reach home doubt may set in.’”
