It is reported that Riyāḥ transmitted hadith from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī; this is mentioned in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (1).
20 – Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥārithī
A Kufan; the most devoted worshipper of his time in Kūfa.
He narrated from al-Awzāʿī and others.
Narrators from him include Ibn Mahdī, Khālid ibn Yazīd, Jarīr ibn Ziyād, and Abū Naṣr al-Tammār, who related various anecdotes.
Abū Usāmah said, “He was among the most devout people of Kūfa.”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Karmānī recounted: “I visited Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr and asked, ‘It seems you dislike sitting with people?’ He replied, ‘Indeed! How could I ever feel lonely when He says, “I am the companion of those who remember Me” (2)?’ ”
ʿAbd al-Quddūs ibn Bakr transmitted from Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr that he said, “The first stage of knowledge is….”
“…and idle distraction and play, except in four cases: a man’s playful time with his wife….”
And his saying: “Your wife has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you.”
And his saying: “I stand in prayer and I sleep, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women; whoever turns away from my sunnah is not of me.”
And his saying: “It is not fitting for a believer to humiliate himself.” They asked, “How does he humiliate himself?” He replied, “By exposing himself to a trial he cannot bear.”
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—has accustomed us not to let such a report pass without comment or critical examination, and I do not know how he overlooked it here.

(2) This report is not authentic. Al-Sakhawi cites it in Al-Maqasid al-Hasanah, pp. 95–96, noting that al-Daylami transmits it from Aishah without a chain as a marfuʿ hadith. By contrast, al-Bukhari, 13/325–326, and Muslim, no. 2675, relate—through Abu Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, declared: ‘I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him whenever he remembers Me….’” His words “I am with him” mean “by His knowledge,” as in the verse: “Indeed I am with you both; I hear and see.” (Q 20:46).
