Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Malik, al-Asmaʿi, Bishr ibn Muḥammad al-Sukkarī, and Abū ʿUmar al-Ḥawḍī.

Al-Nasāʾī said, “He is not reliable.”

Ibn ʿAdī remarked, “The material he relates is not sound.”

It is reported from Ibn Maʿīn that he said, “Dujayn ibn Thābit is Juḥā. (1)”

Ibn ʿAdī, however, considered anyone who quoted this statement from Yaḥyā to be in error, saying, “He knows the narrators too well to have said such a thing; and since Ibn al-Mubārak, Wakīʿ, and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad all narrated from Dujayn, these men fear Allah far too much to transmit from Juḥā.”

As for Aḥmad al-Shīrāzī, he mentioned in The Book of Epithets that Dujayn was Juḥā, and then cited Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm, who said: “I saw Juḥā, about whom it is claimed that lies are invented. He was a witty young man, with effeminate neighbors who used to joke with him and exaggerate about him.”

ʿAbbād ibn Ṣuhayb said, “Abū al-Ghuṣn Juḥā narrated to us—and I have never seen anyone more intelligent than he.” His scribe added, “Perhaps he used to jest in his youth; but when he grew older he turned to serious matters, and the hadith scholars took from him.”

It has also been said that the facetious Juḥā was younger than Dujayn, because ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah met Juḥā—and Allah knows best.

Likewise, those who claimed that Abū al-Ghuṣn Thābit ibn Qays al-Madani was Juḥā have also erred.

(1) Tarikh Yahya, 2/155, states: “Al-Dujayn’s reports are of no value, even though Ibn al-Mubarak narrated from him.”
