except in those narrations that accord with the trustworthy transmitters; in those he is truthful (1).
Al-Dānī said, “He received the Qur’anic recitation directly from Abū Jaʿfar.”
He also transmitted the variant readings from Nāfiʿ (2).
Hajjāj al-Aʿwar reported the readings from him, and ʿAlī al-Kisāʾī and Ibn Wahb likewise heard them from him.
Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim remarked, “In their eyes he is not a ḥāfiẓ.”
I say: His ḥadith are fair, and some scholars even regard him as an authority.
He died in the year 174 AH.
Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; al-Fath ibn ʿAbd al-Salām informed us; Hibat Allāh al-Ḥāsib informed us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzār narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī reported to us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī related to us; Dāwūd ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwa, from his father, said:
“Al-ʿAbbās took the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-ʿAqaba, when seventy men from the Anṣār had gathered. He pledged them to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and stipulated the conditions on his behalf. By Allah, that was in the very dawn of Islam, before anyone had worshipped Allah openly (3).”
