15 – al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī * (ʿ)
the son of Khālid ibn Ḥizām ibn Khuwaylid, al-Qurashī, al-Asadī, al-Ḥizāmī, the Madinan, the jurist, the genealogist; he was also known as Quṣayy.
He kept close company with Abū al-Zinād and transmitted extensively from him. He also narrated from Sālim Abū al-Naḍr, al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab, ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn Suhayl, and a number of others.
Those who reported from him include al-Qaʿnabī, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr, Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Tamīmī, Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, Khālid ibn Khidāsh, Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd, and many more.
He was noble, highly respected, an authority on lineage, truthful, and learned.
Abū Dāwūd and others said, “There is nothing wrong with him.” Yet Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn remarked, “His hadith is worthless.”
I say: the authors of the Ṣaḥīḥ collections did use him as evidence, though some of his reports are objectionable.
Al-Nasāʾī recorded for him the hadith transmitted from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah: that the Prophet ﷺ ruled that an oath together with a witness is sufficient.⦗1⦘
