and Mālik one thousand dinars; he also gave Manṣūr ibn ʿAmmār, the preacher, one thousand dinars and a slave-girl valued at three hundred dinars. (1)
He said: A woman once came to al-Layth and pleaded, “Abū al-Ḥārith, I have a sick son who is longing for honey.” Al-Layth replied, “Boy, give her a mirṭ of honey.” A mirṭ equals one hundred and twenty raṭls.
ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Shuʿayb ibn al-Layth ibn Saʿd recounted: I heard my father say, “Zakāh has never become due on me since I reached maturity.”
Abū Ṣāliḥ said: A woman asked al-Layth for a mann of honey, so he ordered that she be given a ziq and remarked, “She asked according to her means, and we have given according to the breadth of ours.” (2)
Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah related: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Isḥāq told me—and I heard Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq al-Saylaḥīnī say—“A woman brought a sukurrajah (3) to al-Layth requesting honey. He ordered someone to escort her with a ziq. She kept refusing, while al-Layth refused to let her leave without the honey, saying, ‘We give in proportion to our capacity.’”
Al-Ḥārith ibn Miskīn narrated: A group of people purchased fruit from al-Layth. Finding the price excessive, they asked him to annul the sale, and he agreed. He then called for a pouch filled with small purses and ordered that they be given fifty dinars. His son al-Ḥārith objected, whereupon he said, “O Allah, pardon me! They had pinned their hopes on that transaction, and I wished to compensate them for the hope they had invested in it with this amount.”
