al-Bukhārī included it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1) as a suspended report, saying:
“Al-Layth said: ‘Hishām ibn ʿUrwah wrote to me …,’ then he cited the ḥadith.” Thus, in the Ṣaḥīḥ it is found as a written finding (wijdād) based on an ijāzah (2).
Ahmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; Akmal ibn Abī al-Azhar informed us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Zunbur informed us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Ḥammād narrated to us; al-Layth related, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah:
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “In Paradise there is a tree whose shade a mounted rider could traverse for one hundred years.” (3)
ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān informed us; Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir, al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Mubārak, and Aḥmad ibn al-Muʾayyad likewise informed us; ʿAbd al-Laṭīf ibn ʿAskar, Ḥasan ibn Abī Bakr ibn al-Zabīdī, al-Nafīs ibn Karam, and Aḥmad ibn Abī
(1) 7/110, “Virtues of the Ansar,” chapter on the hadith of Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl. Al-Hafiz remarks: “We have also transmitted this hadith with a continuous chain in the collection of Zughbah, related by Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dawud from Isa ibn Hammad—known as Zughbah—from al-Layth.”
(2) Wijada (with a short i) occurs when someone discovers hadiths or a book written in the hand of their transmitter. He may cite them, saying by way of narration: “I read in the handwriting (or in the book) of so-and-so: ‘So-and-so related to us…,’” and then give the isnad and the text. He may also say: “So-and-so said,” provided this does not create the false impression of direct hearing. He may not say: “He related to us” or “He informed us,” which imply an uninterrupted chain. Imam al-Shafi‘i reportedly allowed acting on such material, and this is the sounder view. Ibn Kathir states in al-Baith al-Hathith, 142: “Wijada is not a formal mode of transmission; it is merely reporting what one has found in a book.” Ibn al-Salah adds that some meticulous Shafi‘i scholars permit its use when the text is deemed trustworthy.
