and wakes up a disbeliever; people will barter away their faith for a paltry share of this world.’
This ḥadith is ḥasan and its chain is of high standing.
It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhī (1) through Qutaybah, and our isnād to it is of equal—indeed higher—elevation.
Abū ʿAlī Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad al-Ṣāliḥī informed us; Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlī informed us; Abū al-Qāsim Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Bannāʾ informed us (ḥ).
Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muʾayyad al-Qarāfī, the ascetic of Egypt, likewise informed us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Isḥāq ibn Mawhūb ibn al-Jawālīqī informed us in Baghdad in the year 620 AH (ḥ).
I read aloud before Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim al-Ṭāʾī, who related from Abū al-Yaman Zayd ibn al-Ḥasan al-Kindī; Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Muhtadī bi-Allāh informed us in the year 532 AH. They said:
Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Zaynī informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Warrāq informed us; Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān ibn al-Ashʿath, the ḥāfiẓ, related to us; ʿĪsā ibn Ḥammād al-Tujībī related to us; al-Layth ibn Saʿd informed us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr, who said:
“I once saw Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl standing with his back against the Kaʿbah, declaring, ‘People of Quraysh! By Allah, no one among you is following the religion of Abraham except me.’ He used to rescue infant girls from being buried alive: whenever a man intended to kill his daughter, he would say, ‘Stop! Do not kill her; I will take care of her for you.’ He would then raise her, and when she reached maturity he would say to her father, ‘If you wish, I will return her to you, and if you wish, I will continue to support her.’”
This is a sound ḥadith. Al-Layth only transmits it from Hishām by ijāzah, because
