Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said: Al-Barqānī informed us; Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbdullāh ibn Ibrāhīm al-Jurjānī narrated to us; it was read aloud before Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī: Muḥammad ibn Wahb relates to you; Muḥammad ibn Salamah narrated to us; from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm; from Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah; from Mālik ibn Anas; from Saʿīd al-Maqburī; from his father—and I know it only from Abū Hurayrah—who said:
The Prophet ﷺ said, “May Allah have mercy on a servant who, having a grievance against his brother concerning his person or his property, goes to him and seeks pardon before his good deeds are taken from him; for if he has no good deeds, some of his brother’s sins will be transferred to him and placed among his own sins.” (1)

Al-Ḥākim said: ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-ʿAdl narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḥanẓalī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Bakr ibn Muḍar narrated to us; Ibn al-Hād narrated to us; Mālik narrated to me, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “None of you must milk his brother’s livestock without his permission. Would any of you like someone to come to his water-container, smash its cover, and scatter what is inside? So none of you may milk his brother’s livestock without his permission.” (2)

(1) It is cited in Al-Hilya, 6/343; al-Tirmidhi (no. 2421) records it in the Book on the Description of the Day of Resurrection, chapter “Concerning the Reckoning and Retribution,” through the chain: Abd al-Rahman b. Muhammad al-Muharibi → Abu Khalid Yazid b. Abd al-Rahman → Zayd b. Abi Anisa → Sa id al-Maqburi. Al-Tirmidhi remarks, “This hadith is hasan sahih gharib as transmitted by Sa id al-Maqburi.” Malik b. Anas also relates it from Sa id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayra, with a similar wording. Al-Bukhari records it (5/73) in the Book of Wrongs, chapter “Oppression is darkness on the Day of Resurrection,” through Adam b. Abi Iyas → Ibn Abi Dhiʿb → Sa id al-Maqburi → Abu Hurayra, who reported that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever has wronged his brother regarding his honour or anything else should seek his pardon today, before the day when there will be neither dinar nor dirham. If he possesses good deeds, they will be taken from him in proportion to his wrongdoing; if he has no good deeds, the victim’s sins will be transferred to him.” (2) The same report appears in the Muwatta, 2/971, Book of Asking Permission, chapter “What is said about sheep,” through Nafiʿ from Ibn Umar; in al-Bukhari, 5/64–65, Book of Lost Property, chapter “It is forbidden to milk someone’s livestock without his permission”; and in Muslim (no. 1726), Book of Lost Property, chapter “The prohibition of milking livestock without the owner’s consent,” both with the chain mentioned above.
