The man called out, “Abū ʿAbd Allah, by Allah, I have asked the people of Basra, Kūfa, and the rest of Iraq about this, and I found no one whom Allah guided to the answer you have been given.” (1)

Ibn ʿAdiyy said in the Musnad of Mālik, with a sound chain from Ibn Wahb:
“I heard Mālik say, ‘I heard a great many hadiths from Ibn Shihāb, yet I have never reported any of them.’
“And he also said, ‘Nāfiʿ transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar an abundance of knowledge—far more than his own sons ever transmitted from him.’ ”
Al-Ḥārith ibn Miskīn related: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying that Mālik remarked,
“I used to go to Nāfiʿ when I was a young lad, accompanied by a servant of mine. He would come down from his staircase, stand with me, and narrate to me. After the dawn prayer he would sit in the mosque, and hardly anyone would come to him.”
Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam said: “I heard Mālik state, ‘Nuʿaym al-Mujmir kept company with Abū Hurayrah for twenty years.’ ”
Maʿn added: “When reporting the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Mālik avoided using the yaʾ, the tāʾ, and similar additions.” (2)
Ibn Wahb said that Mālik declared, “Knowledge is wherever Allah chooses to place it; it is not merely a matter of copious transmission.”
Ibn Wahb also said: “I heard Mālik say, ‘It is incumbent upon anyone who seeks knowledge that he should have…’”
